This picture stemmed from my current assignment for my graphic narrative class. The comic I’m working on is a retelling of the classic “tortoise and the hare” story, but with super heroes (it’ll be up later this week). Since it’s pretty lighthearted, I’m using my usual cartoony comic style. But as I was drawing it, I just really got the urge to draw these heroes for real in a more serious way. So that’s where this picture, featuring Kid Flash (Bart Allen) and Superboy Prime, came from. The relationship between these two has always fascinated me. Superboy Prime is an insane murderer who can take on the strongest heroes in the universe (Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Power Girl, Martian Manhunter, Sodom Yat, etc) at the same time and win, and yet he’s deathly afraid of a kid who can run fast. I dunno, I think it’s pretty funny, although I guess he has a good reason for it.
Anyway, enough nerding out, here’s the picture. I penciled and inked it by hand on an 11×17 piece of bristol board, then shrunk it at a copier and scanned it in to color digitally. Been working on it off and on for the better part of a week now, and I like how it turned out.

Click on it to make it larger.
That’s what she said?
…..whatever, I’m tired. Don’t judge me.
Here’s another assignment from my graphic narrative class. We had to draw three 3 panel strips about things that have happened to us recently, so basically a diary in comic form. I also took this time to experiment with different inking techniques. I usually either ink digitally or with a Micron pen. I used the pen for the first strip, but then I went with a watercolor brush and ink for the second strip (NEVER AGAIN) and a calligraphy pen and ink for the third one. The brush was just way too unwieldy for me, which is why the strip looks like crap. The calligraphy pen was okay, but it was still a little too awkward for me to use. So I think I’ll just stick with the pens.

Here’s one of the first comics that I did for my graphic narrative class. It’s a short strip that’s supposed to teach you how to tie your shoes, and we couldn’t use any dialog. It was kind of hard.

So hey, here’s another little glimpse into my wacky imagination. In my comic art class, we were given 12 different scenarios and we had to quickly draw whatever came to mind. Here is the list we got, followed by my drawings.
- The beginning of the universe
- The end of the universe
- A self portrait
- Something that happened yesterday (Which would’ve been Tuesday now, whatever)
- A daydream
- Something that happened between pictures 1 and 2 (If you can’t read it, the cocoon is saying “Wings are gonna ROCK!”)
- Something that happened immediately after #6
- Something that happened this morning (Note: this may or may not be 100% accurate)
- Something that happened last Halloween (That’s me playing Luigi’s Mansion, I really didn’t feel like going out)
- Something that happened immediately after any of the above (The continuing adventures of the unfortunate cocoon)
- A different perspective of #10 (The spider’s saying “Awesome!”, if you couldn’t read it)
- A random image

So yeah, that’s what I came up with. I’m so silly.
So, I figure a week is about the most I’d like to go between updates. I’ve been drawing a lot of random stuff for my comics class, all of which the professor currently has. So, in lieu of that I provide you with a sample of what my school notebook looks like:

In case you were wondering, the topic of the class was if video games caused violent behavior in people, AKA the most overdone faux-philosophical college question ever (P.S., they really don’t).
I’m such a good student.
So, it’s the first full week of classes this week, and it’s going pretty well. The way I usually break down my schedule is two classes from my major and two general required classes each quarter (DePaul’s on the trimester system, so four classes for each 10 week quarter (fall, winter, and spring)). This way I’ve got a nice variety in my assignments to keep me fresh. Anyway, my two animation-ish classes this quarter are Animation Production I (meaning I’ll have another sweet cartoon to show y’all in about 10 weeks) and Graphic Narrative, which is all about the art of comic books. YES. This is the first time it’s being taught, and it’s super sweet. Two of my biggest hobbies are drawing and reading comic books, so this is pretty awesome. All of our assignments involve doodling in our sketch books and creating our own comic strips, which I do in my spare time anyway so I hesitate to call it homework. Anyway, we’ve had two assignments so far. One of them the professor (Aaron Renier, a professional comic artist) still has, which I’ll post when I get it back, but the other one I’m about to show you.
The parameters of the assignment was that it had to be six panels, no dialog, and had to illustrate a basic story (which he assigned us). I’ll tell you what’s supposed to be going on after the comic, so try and see if you can follow what’s happening.

So, did you understand it? It’s about a guy who wakes up late for school and rushes to get there, only to find that it’s only Sunday, so there’s no class. If you got that, then yay. If not, then I don’t blame you. Telling that in six panels with no words is kinda hard. But hey, that’s what I’ll be learning how to do in this class. Exciting.
A silly drawing today. I’m not even sure what he’s really supposed to be, but I had fun drawing him.

Lookit him go.
Just another doodle tonight. A couple dudes hunting a chicken. Yes.

Man, been feeling lazy lately. Maybe once I get back into the rythm of school (starts Wednesday) I’ll start cranking out some quality art.
So hey, it’s been too long since a real update here. I’m still waiting on word on the animation, and I’ve been busy prepping for the school year. But I needed to get something up, so here are a few random sketches I’ve done over the past few days. Just a glimpse into my crazy imagination.

So hey, it’s gonna be a bit before the next update. I’m currently at my parent’s house because it’s about time we moved my younger brother into college. I came back a couple days early to hang with him a bit and see some friends, and I won’t be back home until Thursday, and I really don’t have access to any of my supplies or tablet or anything. So, um, come back Thursday-ish? Hey, maybe I’ll have our animation to show then.
